English Jordi Rubió i Balaguer (Barcelona, 1887 - 1982) was director of the Library of Catalonia from the time of its inception in 1914 by the Mancomunitat (created in 1914 as a union of the four Catalan county councils and suspended by the Primo de Rivera dictatorship in 1925) and he also organised the network of Popular Libraries which were founded a year later. During the Spanish Civil War, he moved the library materials from the Generalitat (Autonomous Government) Palace to the building of the old Santa Creu Hospital, thus managing to save this wealth of library resources, while he also was director of the library service at the front. He taught Catalan literature, bibliology and library economics at the Librariansí School, at Catalan University Studies school and at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Author of tracts and manuals on library cataloguing systems and of numerous research studies on historiography and systematisation of the study of Catalan literature, he was awarded the Prize of Honour in Catalan Letters in 1969 and the Gold Medal of the Generalitat (Autonomous Government) of Catalonia in 1980. He was a founding member of the Associació d'Escriptors en Llengua Catalana (Association of Catalan Language Writers). Español Jordi Rubió Balaguer (Barcelona, 1887-1982). Director de la Biblioteca de Catalunya desde que fue fundada en 1914 por la Mancomunitat de Catalunya, organizó la red de Bibliotecas Populares creada un año más tarde. Durante la guerra civil española, trasladó el fondo de la Biblioteca del Palau de la Generalitat al antiguo Hospital de la Santa Creu barcelonés, con lo que logró salvar el tesoro bibliográfico, y dirigió también el servicio de bibliotecas del frente. Fue profesor de Literatura catalana, Bibliografía y Biblioteconomía en la Escola de Bibliotecàries, en los Estudis Universitaris Catalans y en la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Autor de tratados y manuales para la catalogación de bibliotecas, así como de numerosos trabajos de investigación sobre temas de historiografía y sistematización del estudio de la literatura catalana. Fue galardonado con el Premi d'Honor de les Lletres Catalanes (1969) y la Medalla d'Or de la Generalitat de Catalunya (1980). Fue miembro fundador de la Associació d'Escriptors en Llengua Catalana.
