Raimon Casellas (Barcelona, 1855 - Sant Joan de les Abadesses, 1910) was a narrator, art critic and journalist. He had an influential role as a theoretician and critic of Modernism and he also made known the works of European artists who were introducing new formal elements at the time. As a novelist, he broke with the nineteenth-century traditions with his work Els sots feréstecs (The Wild Ravines) which is considered as the first Modernist novel and a forerunner of the rural naturalism school that subsequently had many followers. In this book Casellas deals with the failure of the intellectual in his attempts to regenerate society. A selection of articles on aesthetics and art criticism that he had written for La Vanguardia was posthumously published in two volumes under the title Etapes estètiques (Aesthetic Stages) (1916 and 1918) with a Prologue by Eugeni d'Ors.
